So, I decided to upgrade the stereo in my garage. If I’m being honest, most of my stereo listening takes place in my garage (sitting outside with my wife, working on projects, shoveling snow, etc…) and I decided it was time for an upgrade. The speakers were a pair of white Bose 151 indoor/outdoor speakers I’ve had for about 15 years and a 30 y/o 12-inch Cerwin Vega down-firing passive subwoofer (my very first Crutchfield catalog purchase IIRC).
In our previous house, the 151s were hanging from our backyard deck, providing sound to the backyard for many of my kids’ dance parties as they grew up. I hung them up in the garage when we moved here five years ago and paired them with the Cerwin Vega for some oomph. The receiver (the Sony STR-DE595 below the monitor in the middle of the picture) was a hand-me-down I got from a friend about a decade ago. The monitor is attached to a Dell Inspiron desktop living under the receiver that serves up Spotify.

Sitting downstairs in the basement family room was a pair of 25+ y/o Bose 301 Series III bookshelf speakers gathering dust. Although the attached stereo was running through my 65-inch TV downstairs, it was rarely getting used. I figured why not put the better speakers and receiver (a Sony STR-DH820) where they’ll get used most? For how much we use that downstairs TV, a decent sound bar will do just fine and Christmas is right around the corner.
I started to look for a way to mount the heavier 301s in a similar spot to my 151s. Thanks to a blog post by a gentleman named Scott Robb, I found my answer: TV Wall Mounts.

Bought a pair of these on Amazon and got to work.
Gotta admit that drilling and driving screws into the back of 25+ y/o speakers that even then were pretty expensive scared me a little, but I think it turned out pretty good.

Getting the brackets aligned/attached was the hard part. Mounting the counterparts on the wall was pretty easy.

Here’s the finished look of both sides.

And both speakers in their new homes with wiring attached (the existing wiring worked great). The Cerwin Vega (which lives under the left side of the workbench) still handles everything below 100Hz and the 301s handle the rest. The sound quality is a MAJOR improvement over the 151s.

And with the newer receiver (again sitting on top of the Dell) and most of the hanging stuff back in its place.

Next up? The boss suggested that I hang the 151s from the soffit outside the garage as a system B to push sound further out the garage when we want to. However, that one might need to wait until spring. It’s getting cold here in SW Wisconsin…
